Colindale, British Library Site

This is a part of a group of sites around Colindale underground station in North London. This site is across Colindale Avenue from the larger ex-hospital site and included a storage facility for the British Library Newspaper collection. This was rehoused in a purpose-built structure out of London and the new design proposal for 400 apartments, community facilities and complementary retail facilities, supporting those across the street by the underground station, is almost finished construction.

This site sites alongside another under-used park with unsafe (but very useful) pedestrian connections through to existing residential areas to the south and the proposal included an increase in public space along the main route, widening access into the park. Also, improved lighting and new public realm treatments along the main route contributed to the definition of the new Colindale neighbourhood focused around the station and the new square.

These new residential buildings will further support the new neighbourhood centre providing providing attractive urban open space and a heart to the new community. AR Urbanism is the masterplanner and urban design advisor working with John Pardey Architects.
